It was actually the subplot of a father developing a relationship with his children that caught my attention in this movie, and I guess when you tackle a story thats so well known you gotta come up... Read more with a new spin on it.
Good action, suspense and a couple of moments of actual and implied horror which kept the mrs nervous on the couch. I was worried it would be like Independance Day but this was a lot grittier and realistic. Not a bad movie.
I don't like this movie much. It seems either Steven Spielberg lose his touch, or there's that Tom Cruise factor that ruin my pleasure watching this. Not to mention Dakota Fanning. Don't get me wrong... Read more; they are talented actors and great director. But sometimes...just sometimes, I want to watch a movie where I don't wish the actors got struck by a lightning. But regardless, this movie is actually decent. The depiction of the surreal environment and reality makes this movie actually more beliveable than Independence Day. Unfortunately, for summer block buster sometimes you need to watch a fun loving action movie instead of this dark real depressing about, well...war. Anyway, the special effects in this movie are awesome, I give them that. But the storylines seems a bit blah. It stays basically in the main characters' point of view, and they hardly showing anything beside staying at the main characters all the time. Ray and Rachel are the most unlikeable characters I've ever met in a movie. I'd expect as protagonists in a movie, I want them to be heroes -- but they spend most of their time in the movie arguing, screaming, crying, even being selfish. And don't let me start with the ending of the movie which is very dissapointing. What the hell? Although it stays true to the novel and the original movie, which I thought was much better, I thought this movie could be better by having different actors and rather have more lighter approach. They seems confused about what audience it's trying to reach, and consequently, isn't likely to satisfy any of them. I feel like I just want to avoid this movie altogether.
Very disappointing - while trying to follow the original storyline from the sound track (If you haven't listened to the original stroy line get it on CD and you will be pleasently surprised). Tried... Read more to make up for the story with special effects and let the whole thing down with a poor ending that didn't explain the reason behind the movie enough.
Great film - remained true to the original vision. Some wonderful moments of horror/anticipation. Not usually a Tom Cruise fan - but he's good in this - realistic characterisation.
Normally can't stand Tom Cruise's acting but was rather impressed by his performance in this one. Mr Spielberg has really made a very true, but modern rendition of this sci-fi classic. There are a couple... Read more of things that are little different - like the way they arrive - but, overall, it hasn't really taken away from the impact of this story. Interesting stuff in the bonus material on disc 2 as well.
Very good creatures and visuals. Although Tim Robbins appears there are no acting requirements.
Absolute rubbish - don't bother as it is a good story ruined
ONE OF THE BETTER SCI-FI MOVIES EVER MADE ,ALTHOUGH YOU HAD TO HAVE A GREAT IMAGINATION TO BELIEVE SOME PARTS
Had to see this movie as they have a stage show about War of the Worlds. OK, holes in the plot - but hey Sunday afternoon kind of movie!!
I always enjoy this film. When I first watched it, I stepped outside and was shocked to see everything calm and no tripods stumbling around shooting people. For some reason, I can never stop shaking... Read more while I watch this film, no matter how many times I see it. I love it. It's rather fast paced and the acting is quite good, and had me crying a lot, being emotional as I am. Worth a watch, in the very least.
