To win a war, you have to start one.

The story of a community, a city, and a nation confronted with an epidemic that few wanted to acknowledge, The Normal Heart follows a group of gay activists, led by New Weeks (Mark Ruffalo), as they fight to expose the truth about the emerging AIDS crisis.

After a celebration of sun and sex on Fire Island, Ned, a writer, notices a New York Times article about a 'gay cancer' that's killing dozens of men in New York City. Little is known about the disease and nearly all of its victims die. Ned seeks out Dr. Emma Brookner (Julia Roberts), a physician and polio survivor who has dedicated herself to treating the earliest victims and researching the recently announced, but still vastly misunderstood, epidemic.
