Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's movie debut focuses on the horrifying, sometimes unintentionally funny system of observation in the former East Germany. In the early 1980s, the successful dramatist Georg Dreyman and his longtime companion Christa-Maria Sieland, a popular actress, are big intellectual stars in the socialist state, although they secretly don't always think loyal to the party line. One day, the Minister of Culture becomes interested in Christa, so the secret service agent Wiesler is instructed to observe and sound out the couple, but their life fascinates him more and more...

This is one of the most exceptional movies I've ever seen. Gives one faith in humanity. 3rd time I've watched it now and it just gets better and better each time

A great film. The main character wakes up from a long emotionless, compassionless sleep before our eyes, and redeems himself selflessly. Beautiful and very moving. One of my favourite movies of all time.

What a good movie - tension, history, relationship surviving through trauma, and a feel good ending that doesn't seem contrived. Highly reccommended

Fantastic. Very moving . The knowledge that good morals lived in some before the fall of the wall............ was strongly portrayed by wonderful actors.

Fantastically moving portrayal of an ethical man. Very interesting to see East Germany before the fall of the wall. Lovely and heartbreaking.
