This is one of the most exceptional movies I've ever seen. Gives one faith in humanity. 3rd time I've watched it now and it just gets better and better each time
Totally enthralling movie which captures the sense of menace of the ubiquitous Stasi(and more broadly power and control politics) without overstatement. Very strong performances. Isn't black and white... Read more and has a very moving twist. Beautifully cast and scripted. Good to watch more than once.
A great film. The main character wakes up from a long emotionless, compassionless sleep before our eyes, and redeems himself selflessly. Beautiful and very moving. One of my favourite movies of all time.
What a good movie - tension, history, relationship surviving through trauma, and a feel good ending that doesn't seem contrived. Highly reccommended
I agree with the other reviews. An eye opener and a great film.
An outstanding masterpiece from Germany and it deservedly won the Oscars for Foreign Movie. A great deal of research went into portraying the lives in the East prior to the fall of Berlin Wall. It... Read more gave us a glimpse of the systems that were used to tap into the private lives of many to ensure that the communist power or facist power of Honecker went unchecked & unchallenged. There's no point to delve into the plots and it's best to watch it uncorrupted. A powerful movie & highly recommended.
Fantastic. Very moving . The knowledge that good morals lived in some before the fall of the wall............ was strongly portrayed by wonderful actors.
Fantastically moving portrayal of an ethical man. Very interesting to see East Germany before the fall of the wall. Lovely and heartbreaking.
This was fascinating, I had no idea of how things were in Germany before the wall came down so this was a real insight into history and to why things were the way they were. It is nice to see a movie... Read more that is a slice of real-life and not a hollywood fantasy. Well acted and plotted, definately worth a watch if you enjoy movies with realism and heart.
Took time getting into it but soon becomes obvious that the main character is going to be affected by those he is surveillancing so makes sense to hanging in there. Not riveting but then the Stasi... Read more weren't exactly and the actors are in a contiunal state of repression too - no intensity or mystery created either - it's a love story. East Berlin looks cool and cars are very square.
