It doesn't all work but the parts that do aren't too bad.
But to be fair this movie isn't all that serious, really it's just one massive joke.
If you like Steve Martin or general silliness this is the movie for you.
I would suggest you watch the... Read more "he hates these cans" scene before making up your mind.
The Jerk is just short of a Steve Martin Classic. We rented it after not having seen it in years to show to our son. Classic lines like the opening of Navin's life story, "I was born a poor black... Read more child" really make it memorable. It is a very simple version of a rags to riches story that has the additional humor and lessons in life of once you can afford fine wines, you still may not appreciate them. Having money and having style are two different things.
We love the basic lessons in life like how to tell the difference between "sh** and shinola" that Navin's dad teaches him. I suppose it will date as kids today don't even know what shinola is and trying to explain to them why that is funny makes for a really good family conversation! The naivety is definitely on the silly side. So not for those who can't take silly. Have a light heart and enjoy the upside ending of this feel good movie.

This has to be the worst movie I have ever seen. How on earth this was Steve Martin's launch pad is beyond me.
