The set designs, wardrobe and the production values overall are spot on. Its a great story with Meryl a delight and I hope history is kind to Florence Foster Jenkins.
After reading many good reviews, we decided to watch this film. What can I say? It was slow, boring, not a lot happened. We made it about a third of the way through before turning it off. It was cringe-worthy and just not worth the hype.
A great story of people making allowances for someone who is likeable and sincere. I wonder though if people would have indulged her if she had not been so rich and generous?
I loved this movie. Meryl Streep make the smart choice of playing it straight, instead of going for cheap laughs, which works brilliantly. Florence is never made a fool of in this film, so the comedy... Read more just comes naturally out of the story. Hugh Grant is as terrific as he usually is, and although Simon Halburg is a scene stealer, he's funny. I thought it was really moving. Lovely to look at too. But one thing I find odd - why do people thing Hugh Grant was a villain? He adored his deluded wife and gave her what she wanted. They were both perfectly happy leading separate lives - for good reason as it turns out - so what's bad about that?
A really good film, acted brilliantly by Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant. There's much more to the main character than you see in the trailers. Meryl manages to sing badly so well.
Let me say, first off, that i am not a Meryl Streep fan. However I thought she was excellent in this, it was absorbing and poignant. Not wildly funny but all the characters were played very well and... Read more the whole thing came together really well. I felt very sad at the end, but also satisfied that I'd watched a good movie. I have also watched the French version of this, Marguerite, which was slightly different (and of course, not based on fact) and good in another way.
What you can do if you're wealthy _and_ likable. Great acting, and a daft, if amusing, plot that's based on a true story. I appreciate that music was her life, but it's a shame her character wasn't more developed.
It is a true story. For more than 25 years she used her inherited fortune to support a group call the Verdi Club and also paid money to various Opera Productions in New York. She sang badly however... Read more all her friends commended her for her efforts and applauded.I like Meryl Streep and to his credit Hugh Grant is excellent. In fact I would go as far as to say Hugh Grant has found his older character part to play, a good looking villain. However, I found the film slow and I cannot give it more than three stars.
This shows a person who is truly lovable and loved and all who came into her life supported her to live her dream, generous to a fault and in spite of extreme adversity Meryl Streep once again...NAILED... Read more !! the part of Florence Foster Jenkins, apparently her record was the most sold in the history of the studio who recorded it and her Carnegie Hall performance, the most requested.
This film has become the film of the year for me. I have already seen it 4 times (twice in the movies and twice on DVD). "Florence Foster Jenkins" contains all the elements of a great movie, but then... Read more we can hardly expect anything less with Meryl Streep playing the lead. When I first saw it, I laughed till I cried! It is full of both hilarious scenes (when Florence is singing), and very moving moments as well. But what makes this film even more compelling, and unbelievable, is that it is based on a true story. So I had no problem in giving "Florence Foster Jenkins" a well deserved 5 stars!
